NTT DATA underscores progress toward “net zero” objectives at World Business Council for Sustainable Development event

  • NTT DATA is on track to reach net zero across Scope 1 and 2 in data centers by 2030 and global offices by 2035.
  • Company partners with Climeworks to apply high-quality carbon dioxide removal for hard-to-abate residual emissions.
  • NTT DATA is leveraging its experience and expertise to help clients achieve net zero emissions, sustainable IT and value-chain transformation.

GENEVA and TOKYO — April 30, 2026 — NTT DATA, a global leader in AI, digital business and technology services, today shared an update on its climate strategy during the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) meeting. The company affirmed its objectives for sustainable operations, including efforts to reduce emissions primarily through operational decarbonization.

David Costa, Chief Sustainability Officer, NTT DATA, presented to the conference on “Driving business innovation through digital avoided emissions solutions.” He emphasized the company’s wide-ranging efforts to achieve net zero emissions. This commitment reflects the company’s mission to accelerate client success and positively impact society through responsible innovation.

As of the company’s most recent public report, for fiscal year 2024, 56% of the electricity powering NTT DATA operations came from renewables, up 7 percentage points from the previous fiscal year. The company expects to report similar momentum in its upcoming report for fiscal year 2025. The company is on track to achieve net zero in Scope 1 and 2 across data center operations by 2030 and in offices worldwide by 2035, and in Scope 3 by 2040.

Climeworks partnership intended to help clear residual emissions

To help address hard-to-abate residual emissions on its net-zero pathway, NTT DATA is the first Japan-based IT and technology services provider to partner with Climeworks to procure high-quality carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits. This approach is intended as a last-mile complement, not a substitute for direct emissions reductions.

“Climate action requires practical execution, clear priorities and transparency,” said Yutaka Sasaki, President and CEO, NTT DATA Group Corporation. “NTT DATA is continuously reducing our carbon emissions, and we extend our overall expertise and experience to help clients along their own journeys to truly sustainable operations. Our agreement with Climeworks complements these efforts by applying high-quality CDR credits toward our own residual emissions, and we believe our support will help expand the effectiveness and reach of CDR technology overall.”

“As artificial intelligence scales and data center construction expands, companies need clear, credible ways to manage their carbon footprint,” said Christoph Gebald, co CEO and co founder of Climeworks. “Through this agreement, we’re helping NTT DATA progress toward its net-zero operational goals. By providing access to hundreds of kilotons of carbon removal over the next decade, Climeworks is demonstrating that carbon removal is becoming a critical part of the AI economy.”

NTT DATA extends its sustainability experience and expertise to help clients worldwide

Costa also highlighted the sustainability services NTT DATA provides to clients worldwide. These services include Climate and Nature, Corporate Sustainability, Sustainable IT, Sustainable Value Chain and more. These offerings help organizations shape net-zero strategies, strengthen reporting, reduce IT-related emissions, improve supply-chain transparency and apply technology innovations to complex sustainability challenges.

“Clients are asking for sustainability strategies that are measurable, operational and grounded in real data,” Costa said. “Our role is to help them move from ambition to action — from carbon measurement and reporting readiness to reduction pathways across operations, technology and value chains. That same discipline guides our own approach: reduce first, be transparent about progress and limitations, and use carbon removal where it is appropriately justified for residual emissions.”

NTT DATA joined WBCSD in June 2025. Costa noted that the company’s participation is helping it stay aligned with evolving best practices in climate and nature action while strengthening the guidance and solutions it brings to clients.
