NTT DATA Supports World’s First Deployment of Nervecentre’s New Patient Administration System at University Hospitals of Leicester

New Patient Administration System (PAS) replaces 35-year-old legacy technologies across the acute trust’s sites, paving the way for smarter and more connected care journeys for a million patients

  • New Patient Administration System developed by Nervecentre Software and installed by NTT DATA is the first entirely new PAS deployed within the NHS this century
  • Installation is expected to save NHS staff time and reduce both errors and waiting times
  • More than 50 million patient records transferred into new PAS, with no data loss or disruption to data reporting
  • Enables more than 18,000 NHS staff in three acute hospitals and community sites to access and update patient information in real time

London, 17 November 2025 – University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (UHL), working with Nervecentre Software and NTT DATA, a global leader in AI, digital business and technology services, has successfully completed the first ever installation of Nervecentre’s new Patient Administration System (PAS). The project has replaced 35-year-old legacy systems with a brand-new, purpose-built PAS that is now an integral part of the Trust’s existing Electronic Patient Record (EPR), also provided by Nervecentre, a UK-based EPR provider now serving 30 hospitals and 125,000 NHS staff.

Patient Administration Systems manage patients’ journeys through care – recording, for example, requests for tests, referrals to consultants, outpatient appointments and hospital admissions – are linked to EPRs, enabling clinicians and administrative staff to rapidly review medical records and manage treatments. The new PAS enables more than 18,000 NHS staff across three acute hospitals and more than eight community sites to access and update patient information in real time: UHL had already become the first NHS Trust to deploy this Nervecentre EPR, and has now become the first to deploy its PAS, fully integrating clinical pathway coordination and care delivery.

Will Monaghan, Group Chief Digital Information Officer at the University Hospitals of Leicester and University Hospitals of Northamptonshire, commented:

“Our existing Patient Administration System just wasn't fit for a complex, modern hospital organisation. We’ve worked with Nervecentre to develop this system from the ground up, and this is the first time it’s been used anywhere in the world. It was designed in partnership with the NHS, for the NHS, and our partnership with NTT DATA and Nervecentre has made it a huge success.”

“For us, this is a step on the journey,” he added. “We’re now really excited about how we can integrate AI into how we deliver and administer clinical care. Our constant focus is on making it easier to provide care, and safer to receive it.”

Having acted as UHL’s strategic technology partner for over 12 years, NTT DATA was uniquely placed to lead a wide range of delivery activities across UHL’s estate. The team worked with the UHL Digital and Data team to manage the end-to-end technical deployment of the new system: from testing and building new reporting capabilities to infrastructure upgrades, user access and ongoing support. This involved the successful migration of more than 50 million records with zero data loss and no disruption to national data submissions.

To underpin the new system, NTT DATA also refreshed vital hardware in clinical settings, and embedded support teams across sites to provide troubleshooting and hands-on help to clinical staff during go-live. Following the launch, NTT DATA ran a 24x7 support help desk to address and resolve any issues quickly.

The new system is expected to save staff time by streamlining the gathering of information; reduce error rates by improving data capture, management and presentation; and shorten waiting times by stripping out administrative work. A patient portal is also set to launch, giving patients better visibility of their appointments and treatment; this will integrate directly into the NHS App.

Flann Horgan, Head of Healthcare Sector at NTT DATA UK&I, said: “This was one of the most ambitious and critical system transformations we’ve delivered in the NHS. Our priorities were continuity of patient care and minimising any disruption to staff across the trust. We’re proud to have brought the scale, experience and expertise needed to make this transition seamless for UHL’s patients and staff.”

NTT DATA continues to support UHL with a 24x7 service desk and applications support as it evolves its digital care model, and is ready to help other trusts modernise core systems with the same approach.
