NTT joins Charter of Trust

As Japan's largest telecommunications company, global IT service provider NTT strengthens cybersecurity initiative Munich, Germany – 14 February 2020 – NTT is now a partner of the global cybersecurity initiative 'Charter of Trust'. This was announced by the technology services company on 14 February 2020, at the Munich Security Conference. NTT's leading role in the Japanese market is supposed to increase the presence of the joint charter in Asia. Since its creation in 2018, Siemens, Deutsche Telekom and MHI, among others, have committed themselves to the document.

Together, the members of the charter pursue the goal of ensuring that effective cybersecurity forms the basis for an open, fair and successful digital future. To this end, they call for binding rules and standards to build trust in cybersecurity and drive digitization forward.

"It makes us proud to be accepted into the selected circle of the Charter of Trust", says Kai Grunwitz, CEO of NTT Ltd. in Germany. "We have always been a company that actively shapes digitization. This global and cross-industry initiative shares our conviction that digitization can create a better future and make a sustainable contribution to solving social challenges. In addition, cybersecurity is a decisive pillar for digitalization, as it creates the necessary trust. As a member of the Charter of Trust, we are committed to contributing to global cybersecurity, both through our own secure ICT services and through cooperation with international partners".

According to the latest Risk Barometer published by insurance group Allianz, threats from cyberattacks have now overtaken all other risks and are now considered as the greatest threat to businesses. With potentially more than 30 billion networked IoT devices, the threat is increasing.

At the Munich Security Conference in February 2018, Siemens and eight industry partners launched the first joint charter for better cybersecurity. The charter’s requirements relate to technical features and organizational measures that are relevant for products, services and the corresponding IT infrastructure. The requirements include, for example, the protection of data throughout its entire life cycle or basic standards for the training of employees in the field of IT security. The supply chain is considered the weakest point in the cybersecurity ecosystem of companies. Sixty percent of cyberattacks can be traced back to parts of the supply chain, and according to current studies, small enterprises are responsible for about 90 percent of cyber-incidents. Based on this background, the CoT partners have decided to promote trainings for cybersecurity issues, especially in the area of small and medium-sized enterprises, which are increasingly targeted by cyberattacks.

Previous partners of the Charter of Trust include Siemens, AES, Airbus, Allianz, Atos, Cisco, Dell Technologies, Deutsche Telekom, IBM, MHI, MSC, NXP, SGS, Total and TÜV SÜD as well as three associated partners: The Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), National Cryptologic Center (CCN) and Graz University of Technology. The German semiconductor manufacturer Infineon and the Hasso-Plattner-Institute for Digital Engineering GmbH (HPI) join at the same time as NTT.
