NTT DATA Receives EcoVadis Gold Medal Sustainability Rating

The rating secures NTT DATA’s place in the top 5% of sustainable companies globally

Johannesburg, 24 June, 2024 NTT DATA Middle East and Africa, a digital business and IT services leader, was recently awarded a Gold Medal Sustainability Rating by EcoVadis, the world’s largest and most trusted provider of business sustainability ratings.

In 2021, NTT DATA launched a sustainability ambition to use technology to enable a better, more connected future for all. We have set ambitious targets to be net-zero in our data centers by 2030, offices and facilities by 2035 and across our value chain by 2040.

This impact was recently recognised when EcoVadis awarded the company a Gold Medal Sustainability Rating that positions it within the top 5% of sustainable companies globally.

“We are proud to have received such an important accolade from an industry body that provides a sustainability scorecard for more than 130,000 companies from over 220 industries and over 180 countries and regions globally”, says Sherrard Govender, MEA Executive: Sustainability. “We have set incredibly ambitious sustainability targets that we hold ourselves accountable to across all our operations. Receiving this type of global recognition reaffirms our commitment to these goals and makes us more resolute than ever to continue driving positive change to mitigate our environmental impact.”

NTT DATA’s approach to sustainability is guided by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Achieving these targets requires long-term planning and investment, adds Govender: “We’re diligently working towards our NET ZERO Vision 2040 and supporting clients to accelerate their own journey to net zero. This means a significant financial investment. For example, we’re using innovative Direct Chip Liquid Cooling and Liquid Immersion Cooling technologies to make our data centers more sustainable as the need for computing power increases with the introduction of Generative AI.

The specific sustainability targets set by NTT DATA are improving livelihoods and contributing to a diverse, equitable and inclusive society. It is one of the first companies to receive approval for its net-zero targets from the Science Based Targets initiative, reinforcing its industry leadership in this area.

NTT LTD, did not only achieve EcoVadis Gold status as mentioned, but offers the market and their clients with global sustainability capabilities such as: a Software-based Carbon Footprint calculator, embeds carbon greenhouse gas emissions visibility across various unique platforms such as their Smart Management Platform (Sustainable Cities and Buildings), Software-Defined Infrastructure (IT OEMs and portfolio level visibility), Managed Network Services (AIOPS and IT assets utilization levels) and Managed Employee Experience platforms. Additionally, they also offer Sustainable Global Data Centers and Colocation services to clients who seek to outsource their energy intensive workloads from older, less energy efficient on-premise data centers to NTT DATA, with the main objective to reduce clients’ operating costs and significantly reducing clients’ scope 1 and scope 2 emissions and their overall IT greenhouse gas footprint.

Through its global technological innovations and partnerships, it’s working to address the world’s climate and risk challenges, with embedded sustainability design thinking across industries and verticals. They have the ability to align with their clients’ unique decarbonisation strategic objectives, help their clients with where to start, where to invest, giving insights on sustainability-led return on investments, with the reduction in carbon footprint calculations to track the impact of capital investments with environmentally friendly alternative solutions, while achieving the necessary carbon footprint targets over time in the form of cost to carbon metrics.

It has also implemented three days of paid volunteer leave annually for its employees to support education and conservation projects within their local communities (in FY23, it contributed 40,780 hours contributed by 6,127 employees.)

“Our brand promise to ‘transform businesses for success, disrupt industries for good, and shape a better world for all’ informs our combined future approach to sustainability. Winning the Gold Medal signifies EcoVadis' high recognition of our efforts in implementing various sustainable development initiatives and corporate social responsibility policies. It also represents how serious we are about the importance of embedding sustainability into the fabric of everything we do as a business. As we strive for a more sustainable future for generations to come, we will continue to innovate to try master the ecological, economic and social challenges of our time,” concludes Govender.
