NTT launches fifth data center in Malaysia

NTT expands its hyperscale data center footprint in Malaysia, creating new job opportunities for the nation and supporting its growing digital economy.

Cyberjaya, Malaysia – 3 February 2021 – NTT Ltd., a leading global technology services company, today announced the launch of its fifth data center in Malaysia. Located within NTT Cyberjaya Campus, the new data center known as Cyberjaya 5 (CBJ5) with 107,000 square feet is designed to meet the requirements of hyperscalers and high-end enterprises. It also aims to support the growing digital economy in Malaysia.

CBJ5 has 6.5MW of critical IT load and it boasts a Tier IV1 ready, compact and modular design, to provide clients with a flexible and scalable power, and cooling solution of up to 15kW/rack. In addition, CBJ5 has a cooling wall system that is the first of its kind, offering optimum power efficiency and cost-effective cooling system to support high density hyperscalers as well as heavy corporate users in Malaysia.

“NTT in Malaysia has been successfully operating the Cyberjaya campus data center for over 24 years. Its expansion and growth are testimonies to Malaysia’s success in becoming the regional data center hub in ASEAN. I believe the launch of CBJ5 is timely and it will certainly attract more international investors and enterprises to Malaysia as a business and economic hub due to its strong digitalization efforts and strategic location within Southeast Asia. This will be instrumental in making Malaysia the ‘Heart of Digital ASEAN’ by 2025 as outlined by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC),” said Hiroshi Oka, Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia.

As of July 2020, Malaysia’s digital economy is worth over RM270 billion and this equates to roughly 18% of Malaysia’s GDP2. Without a doubt, the COVID-19 crisis and the resulting lockdown has spurred this growth. As the pandemic accelerated the digitalization of businesses in Malaysia, economic activities have increasingly moved online during this period. Digital economy will be the key driver of the country’s economic growth.

“The demand for data storage and managed hosting services is expected to grow exponentially across Malaysia. This fifth data center will meet the expanding needs of organizations to reach their digital business objectives, in particular the FSI sector, as our data center complies with the Risk Management in Technology (RMiT) guideline set by Bank Negara Malaysia. We hope to play a key role in providing the vital data capacity at a high speed to keep Malaysia’s digital ecosystems and the digital economy ticking.” said Henrick Choo, CEO, NTT Ltd. in Malaysia.

The data center footprint expansion in Malaysia is part of the ongoing growth strategy by NTT’s Global Data Centers division, which operates the third-largest data center platform in the world across 20 countries and regions. Malaysia is one of the prime data center markets in the region due to the abundant availability of resources and favorable government policies concerning data center infrastructure.

“NTT places Asia Pacific as a tactical key region, and Malaysia – a strategic hub for the submarine cables operated by NTT such as the new MIST3 cable system, as well as the existing Asia Submarine-cable Express (ASE) and Asia Pacific Gateway (APG). Furthermore, CBJ5 will drive business opportunities in Asia through the upcoming MIST cable system which will link all our large-scale data centers in the region. Our continued commitment to Malaysia will help position NTT as a technologically innovative leader to address the industries of the future,” said Ryuichi Matsuo, Executive Vice President for NTT Ltd.’s Global Data Centers division.

“The pandemic also illustrated the importance of effective connectivity and reliable infrastructure to ensure business continuity. NTT’s global data center platform offers flexible, scalable and secure infrastructure along with a full-stack of customizable solutions that clients can utilize to support their digital transformation needs and maintain critical applications in a comprehensive, hybrid IT environment,” he concluded.

Data centers offered by NTT Ltd. have global reach alongside local operational expertise and provide access to a wide portfolio of ICT solutions and enhanced IT capabilities including managed hosting, colocation, security and hybrid cloud and network services. More importantly, the all-encompassing solution comes with solid managed security solutions that give clients maximum protection while minimizing business disruptions.
