Construction of JHB Campus
The JHB Campus is a planned data center development in Johor. We obtained the land title deed under NTT GLOBAL DATA CENTERS JHB1 SDN.BHD in April 2026.
What is a data center?
What is a data center?
A data center is a secure, highly reliable facility that houses critical information technology systems such as servers, storage and network equipment. These facilities are designed to ensure continuous, uninterrupted operation by means of redundant power supplies, advanced cooling systems suited to Malaysia’s tropical climate, and comprehensive physical security measures.
Large data centers are typically purpose-built buildings optimized to support IT infrastructure efficiently. As they scale in size, they benefit from increased cost-efficiency and energy optimization through shared infrastructure and advanced technologies.
NTT DATA’s colocation data centers in Malaysia provide both the technological foundation and operational expertise required to support our clients’ critical IT systems. Some facilities are dedicated to a single organization, while others serve a diverse range of clients in industries such as finance, telecommunications, manufacturing and digital services.
Why do we need data centers?
Data centers are the backbone of today’s digital economy and play a vital role in everyday life in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia. From mobile applications and online banking to e-commerce platforms and cloud services, nearly every digital interaction relies on data centers.
As Malaysia continues to grow as a regional digital hub, data centers support key national initiatives such as digital transformation, smart cities and Industry 4.0. Businesses, government services and individuals depend on them for essential functions such as communication, financial transactions and public services.
Because of their importance, data centers are considered critical infrastructure. In Malaysia, their operation is guided by regulatory frameworks and standards set by authorities such as the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), as well as data protection requirements under the Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA).
How does a data center work?
Every digital service accessed through the internet or the cloud relies on data centers. Inside a data center, thousands of servers process, store and manage the data that powers applications such as websites, video streaming, financial systems and enterprise platforms. Data flows both within the facility and externally through high-speed, resilient network connections linking Malaysia to global and regional internet hubs.
Storage systems ensure that data is organized and readily accessible, while robust security measures — including encryption, firewalls and access controls — protect against unauthorized access and safeguard data integrity.
To ensure reliability, data centers implement redundancy across critical systems, including power and connectivity, along with regular data backups. These measures enable rapid recovery in the event of disruptions. Advanced management systems continuously monitor and optimize operations to ensure efficiency and performance.
NTT DATA’s data centers in Malaysia are designed to provide a secure, stable and high-performance environment. Strategic locations with strong connectivity reduce latency, supporting seamless digital experiences across the region. Comprehensive physical and cybersecurity measures ensure the protection of infrastructure and customer data.
Since all computing processes generate heat, cooling is a key component of data center operations. In Malaysia’s warm and humid climate, highly efficient cooling technologies are essential to maintain optimal operating conditions while minimizing environmental impact.
How a data center works
How much energy do data centers use?
The amount of energy a data center uses depends on how intensively it is operated and the types of services it supports. As demand for digital services grows in Malaysia and across Southeast Asia, energy consumption by data centers is also increasing, but it remains a relatively small share of overall national energy use.
In Malaysia, data centers account for only a modest portion of total electricity consumption compared to industries such as manufacturing or transportation. However, as the country continues to develop as a regional digital hub — riven by cloud adoption, AI workloads and digital services — the energy demand of data centers is expected to grow steadily.
However, modern data centers are designed to be highly energy-efficient. Larger facilities benefit from economies of scale and use advanced technologies to optimize power usage, including energy-efficient cooling systems, intelligent workload management, and increasing integration of renewable energy sources.
We continuously focuses on improving energy efficiency across our Malaysian operations, helping clients reduce their environmental footprint while ensuring reliable, high-performance digital infrastructure.

Water and utilities overview
JHB10 will use air-cooled chillers with closed-loop system. Unlike traditional water-cooled systems, air-cooled chillers operate in a closed loop. This means the system is filled once and treated over many years, eliminating the need for continuous water replenishment.
We currently have (16? – Marketing team to advise how many buildings in globe we are using closed loop system) buildings in our portfolio that use a closed-loop system, and historic water usage in these buildings is a fraction of the consumption required by conventional cooling methods.

By reducing dependency on water-intensive cooling, we not only conserve a vital resource but also align with Johor’s environmental goals. This approach minimizes strain on local water supplies while ensuring operational excellence.
Through efficient cooling and minimal water use, we aim to set a benchmark for sustainable and responsible development in the region.
