What happens when something critical fails in an organization?

Usually, the organization’s infrastructure is advanced enough to react, issue an alert and even escalate the alert so that humans can step in, containing the damage.
But what if infrastructure didn’t just react to such events and instead anticipated and prevented them?
The fourth macrotrend in the NTT DATA Technology Foresight 2026 report explores this shift.
Infrastructure is no longer the passive backbone humming in the background. It is becoming cognitive, predictive and adaptive — the operational bedrock of mass intelligence.
From invisible utility to intelligent asset
For many years, infrastructure was treated like plumbing — necessary but invisible. But demand for computing is exploding, driven by AI, connected devices and distributed intelligence. Energy constraints, sovereignty concerns and regulatory pressure are also intensifying.
In this environment, infrastructure needs to start thinking ahead.
Informed infrastructure has the ability to sense, model, simulate and optimize entire environments even before decisions are made by humans. High-performance computing, edge-to-cloud connectivity and advanced simulation allow organizations to move from reactive operations to predictive ones.
Intelligence cannot scale on outdated foundations. Informed infrastructure acts as the road network, energy grid and traffic controls that make it usable at scale.
By treating infrastructure as a strategic intelligence layer rather than a technical afterthought, organizations can operate faster and with a higher degree of resilience.
Informed infrastructure in action
Cities that rehearse the future
As countries around the world deal with the climate crisis, many cities need to prepare for extreme weather, such as heavy rainfall that causes flooding.
By using digital twins — virtual replicas of roads, drainage systems, power networks and transportation flows — to simulate various scenarios, city officials can test and prepare for traffic rerouting and emergency response capacity before a single cloud appears.
When sensors detect rising water levels, emergency systems won’t just alert operators. They will also adjust traffic signals and trigger preventive maintenance crews, among other tasks.
Cloud–edge orchestration and digital twins enable this level of predictive operations through virtual testing and real-time optimization. The result is public infrastructure that’s resilient by design.
However, digital twins are only as reliable as the data and models that power them. Incomplete datasets, biased assumptions or outdated inputs can produce inaccurate simulations. If certain neighborhoods lack sensor coverage, for example, risk models may underestimate vulnerability. Digital twins must therefore be continuously validated, transparently governed and regularly stress-tested against real-world outcomes.
Factories that self-correct
In manufacturing, think of a global production network that supports multiple plants. In a traditional setup, when one production line starts drifting out of tolerance, defects will appear, inspections will flag the issue, and managers will scramble to fix it.
But with an informed infrastructure model, continuous telemetry feeds an operational digital twin. AI-powered observability detects the anomaly early, and the system adjusts parameters automatically, reroutes workflows, and prevents downtime and waste.
In this way, infrastructure not only supports operations but also optimizes them in real time.
Energy systems that balance themselves
Energy is another proving ground. As renewable energy sources expand, supply becomes more variable and demand patterns shift.
In this dynamic environment, informed infrastructure can coordinate computing, storage and energy production across regions, with digital twins modeling emissions and grid behavior. Workloads can be routed based on energy availability and carbon intensity.
When infrastructure becomes energy-aware — balancing cost, resilience and carbon savings in one never-ending loop — organizations can come closer to optimizing energy use and meeting their sustainability targets.
The architecture behind informed infrastructure
Our report describes informed infrastructure as a distributed model where cloud-scale intelligence, local inference and on-device sensing operate as a coordinated whole:
- Initially, organizations need to strengthen their cloud–edge orchestration, sovereign cloud zones and interoperability standards to prepare for AI-intensive workloads.
- In the next phase, self-healing systems, federated learning and adaptive governance engines are used to scale distributed intelligence across environments.
- Looking further ahead, infrastructure becomes an autonomous fabric that coordinates computing, energy and data flows with minimal human intervention.
These advances are not meant to replace employees but rather free them from firefighting to focus on designing and managing systems more strategically.
One pillar of a bigger transformation
Informed infrastructure is one of six interconnected macrotrends shaping the era of mass intelligence.

Together, these trends outline an architecture for a future where systems are adaptive, transparent and purpose-driven.
